Sore scalp? 4 possible causes and treatments for scalp tenderness

  • 1
    Skip the ponytails

It’s common knowledge that conditions such as traction alopecia can be caused by tight hairstyles (including Ari-inspired high ponytails, buns and braids). But it’s less known that these styles can damage hair follicles, causing scalp pain. The solution? Give hair a break: wear it down when you can, and opt for wearing styles less tight on the scalp. Oh, and try not to sleep in them.

    Cut back on dry shampoo

Being overly reliant on dry shampoo may leave your scalp dirty, which may result in irritation. Dry shampoo also contains fragrances. If you do like to use dry shampoo occasionally, try Dove Care Between Washes Dry Shampoo Wipes to freshen up locks and leave less residue in your hair than traditional dry shampoo.

    Switch up your shampoo

Finding the balance between over washing and under washing your hair can be tricky, but if you’re a daily washer, try using a gentle fragrance free shampoo formulated for sensitive scalps.

    Be aware of dye-induced pain

Being a regular in your colorist's chair could be causing scalp tenderness, especially if they use bleach. If you can, go longer between appointments, or ask your colorist if the dye can be washed off sooner. Remember, dye can cause severe allergic reactions and you’re not supposed to get dye products on your scalp. If all else fails, speak to your doctor – a prescription may be needed.
