Demographics
Menopause has always been around. But we’re now living and working for longer, which means more people are working through their menopause transition than ever before. Menopause aged women are the fastest growing workforce demographic in Australia.
The Australasian Menopause Society estimates there are over 5 million menopausal people in Australia and New Zealand, nearly 3 million are experiencing moderate symptoms and over 1 million suffering severe symptoms.
Dove Menopause Insights (DMI) research tells us that many people are unwilling to discuss menopause-related health problems at work or ask for the support or any adjustments they may need.
Raising awareness for menopause and providing support in the workplace has many benefits for individuals and businesses. These benefits include helping us create a more inclusive culture, attract and retain talent and improve performance and engagement.
Dove Menopause Insights (DMI) research tells us that:
• Nearly half (45%) feel they weren’t performing at their best at work and one in four 26% wanted to take time off work but had no leave or couldn’t afford to financially, although one in six (17%) did take time off/leave.
• One in six (16%) thought about reducing their work hours or quitting/resigning, but didn’t, although one in nine (11%) did end up reducing their work hours and 5% did end up deciding to quit/resign.
• Full-time workers are more likely than part-time workers to have thought about reducing their work hours or quitting/resigning, but didn’t (19% compared to 12%).
Opening the conversation about menopause and supporting women to stay engaged at work will make a big difference to people’s lives and improve gender equality.
