Tackling internet haters – Dove Self-Esteem Project

Encourage your child to ignore online haters

It's best not to retaliate or sink to the hater’s level. Negativity breeds negativity; so help them try to rise above it

  • 2
Explain that it’s a waste of time worrying about people who aren’t worth it

Talk to your child about what makes a good friend, and how it’s impossible to please everyone all the time. It's our loved ones whose opinions matter, not the haters

  • 3
Ban or block anyone making hateful comments

As well as being a good safety measure, taking control will make your child feel empowered

  • 4
Be safety-conscious about social media use

Don't give your child a smartphone or unsupervised access to the internet until they can use it responsibly. Check that their profiles are set to ‘private’ and they only engage with people they know

  • 5
Ensure your child spends plenty of time in the real world

Removing them from the online world and reminding them of the things that are truly important will help put comments from haters in perspective
